Biography

Miguel A Gamiño Jr. serves the City of New York as Chief Technology Officer (CTO). In this role, he is working with City agencies to develop a Smart City and “Internet of Things” (IoT) strategy that ensures coordination, collaboration and innovation across the City. He also leads the City’s Broadband program, partnering with agencies, private industry and academia to further the Mayor’s goal to ensure every resident and business will have access to affordable, reliable, high-speed broadband service everywhere by 2025. Mr. Gamiño has unique experience in government, blended with a deep knowledge of technology, the industry that fuels it, and the culture it inspires. Most recently he served the City and County of San Francisco as Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Executive Director of the Department of Technology. In that role, he represented the Mayor as a designee on the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Intergovernmental Advisory Committee (IAC). Mr. Gamiño also co-founded, along with the Washington, D.C. CTO, the Council of Global City CIOs. New York City is a founding member and will benefit from the organization’s focus on a robust and secure rollout of Smart City and IoT technologies. Prior to joining San Francisco in July 2013, Miguel served the City of El Paso, Texas as the Chief Information & Innovation Officer and Director of the Department of Information Technology Services. As a technology entrepreneur, Gamiño founded two technology companies, managed them through the start-up phase and into successful operations. Mr. Gamiño has been recognized in GovTech Magazine as a Top 25 Doer, Dreamer and Driver of 2016. StateScoop, a leading government technology magazine recognized Mr. Gamiño for his work leading San Francisco’s technology strategy and services with the 2016 Golden Gov: State Executive of the Year award. Miguel is a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso with a dual major Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting and Computer Information Systems. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. He also attended the CIO Institute at Heinz College of Public Policy and Information Systems Management at Carnegie Mellon University in Washington D.C.
